Message:
Hello everyone. This month we hold our
50th Anniversary Show, hopefully our best show ever with spectacular
commemorative ribbons and lots of deserving exhibitors to win them. The show
requires a lot of coordinated effort among our members and I am confident
everyone will do their best to participate.
The meeting on August 10 is important
to iron down the final planning and assign people to the many activities
necessary to produce the show. I hope everyone will make an effort to attend.
For the new members, we always have things you can do to help, and all CDS members
are guaranteed the opportunity to participate in judging at the show as either
clerks or Student Judges. This is a great way to learn about showing dahlias,
how they are judged, and allows you to see all the dahlias without having to
wait for the public showing at
After a dry summer down here, the
recent rains have helped. I hear that most of our members north of the coast
have had enough rain and have good growth on the dahlias. I noticed some mite
damage on a couple plants for the first time last week and have begun spraying
for them. Getting an early start on the mites is a good idea. For new members,
they are always on the undersides of the leaves, never the tops, and the damage
is evident as pale blotches on lower leaves. They can be treated with Avid, and
Ortho Garden Systemic (the old Isotox) contains a miticide. Most insecticides
are not effective against mites regardless of their labeling. You have to spray
up at the undersides of the leaves to get them.
See you at the meeting, and if not the
meeting, at the show!
