President’s Message:

Hello everyone. This month we hold our 50th Anniversary Show, hopefully our best show ever with spectacular commemorative ribbons and lots of deserving exhibitors to win them. The show requires a lot of coordinated effort among our members and I am confident everyone will do their best to participate.

The meeting on August 10 is important to iron down the final planning and assign people to the many activities necessary to produce the show. I hope everyone will make an effort to attend. For the new members, we always have things you can do to help, and all CDS members are guaranteed the opportunity to participate in judging at the show as either clerks or Student Judges. This is a great way to learn about showing dahlias, how they are judged, and allows you to see all the dahlias without having to wait for the public showing at 1:30.

After a dry summer down here, the recent rains have helped. I hear that most of our members north of the coast have had enough rain and have good growth on the dahlias. I noticed some mite damage on a couple plants for the first time last week and have begun spraying for them. Getting an early start on the mites is a good idea. For new members, they are always on the undersides of the leaves, never the tops, and the damage is evident as pale blotches on lower leaves. They can be treated with Avid, and Ortho Garden Systemic (the old Isotox) contains a miticide. Most insecticides are not effective against mites regardless of their labeling. You have to spray up at the undersides of the leaves to get them.

See you at the meeting, and if not the meeting, at the show!

CDS 50th Anniversary Show & 38th NADC Show:

Friday, Show set-up: this will begin at Noon on Friday at the Pond House as usual and we are looking for volunteers to help.  This is a good time for new members to join us in participating in the staging of the show.  It is fun to walk in on Saturday after the judging to see the whole magnificent show staged for the public, but there is a lot of work that goes on before that to prepare the hall for the receipt of the blooms. Please volunteer your help to Jesse Peterson, Show Chairman at: (860) 485-0326 or jessepj@sbcbglobal.net

Saturday, Judging and Clerking: during this time we always have room for new clerks to learn this aspect of the show.  Please contact our Clerk’s Chairman, Andre LaRochelle to volunteer your services at: Home (860) 673-2886, Work (860) 545-7219, or andrebarbara@comcast.net

Saturday: NADC Meeting this will take place after the Judge’s and Clerk’s luncheon about 2:00 pm. This meeting is open to all and the various societies in the NADC will conduct their fall business at this time.

Sunday:  Members are needed to be present in the show hall to meet, great and give information on the show and the society to visitors.  Name badges will be available for all members so that the public may identify you.  There will also be a need for members to be at the Display Gardens to answer questions.

Sunday: CDS Judges Program: CDS Judges this year will be involved in learning “Classification” as part of their on-going judges’ training.  Marge will conduct this program in the afternoon.

Sunday: Show Breakdown:  This will begin at 4:00 pm and as usual, the more hands we have for this task, the faster it goes.  We will ask for your commitment to help us in this process. Please volunteer your help to Jesse Peterson, Show Chairman.
